High in the sky

A quiet day beginning with breakfast at The Pigeon Hole - a miniscule cafe serving an amazing breakfast - outside some of the hikers from 3 Capes! We know four people in Hobart!
Then on to Huonville, Geeveston and the Tahune Airwalk. This area was devastated by fire early in 2019 and is in recovery.
The Geeveston visitor centre highlights the forestry industry with artefacts and displays and the town features wooden chainsaw sculptures.

               Dr Kyle - local identity.

Geeveston is tiny but has a number of local artists and obviously a strong community spirit.

As we drove to the Tahune Airwalk we really became aware of the extent of the fire devastation - blackened and scorched trees are everywhere. BUT there are signs of life! Many Tasmanian species are activated by fire and ferns, both ground fems, brackens and tree-ferns are vibrant amongst the burn.

The Airwalk was severely impacted and remained closed until February this year. Instead of looking at the canopy of green below, now you see blackened but also recovering Bush. Some trees were over 300 years old and have survived but others are lost. The work to restore has been incredible!.

                        A lost giant!

30 metres above ground the Airwalk takes you above the new landscape.

Alastair went out on the cantilever - you can feel it moving!

On our way back to Hobart we bought fresh apples from a roadside stall - bag for $2.50 in an honesty box!

Tonight Alastair took me out for my actual birth day to Blue Eye seafood restaurant on the waterfront- I usually don't say too much about food - but the seafood platter was magnificent accompanied by Tasmanian wines. A memorable seal on my special day! We walked along the wharf in search of a taxi the air balmy and filled with the sound of happy diners in the many pubs and restaurants near the docks. Hobart is a beautiful city, filled with architectural treasures, history and charm. Tomorrow we are checking out Bruny Island.
